The Utah Kratom Consumer Protection Act (KCPA) is designed with your health and safety in mind. The Specialized Products Division works to ensure that kratom products sold in the state meet strict standards for safety, purity, and labeling. This page helps you understand what to look for and what to avoid when purchasing kratom in Utah.

Consumer Knowledge

Being an informed consumer helps you identify compliant products and promotes a responsible market.

What to Look For When Buying Kratom in Utah:

When purchasing kratom (including online), you should expect products to comply with specific regulations designed for your safety:

    • Only purchase products on the approved product list.
      • Products on this list have been reviewed, and the submitted testing results have been checked to ensure compliance.
    • The label should tell you the amount of Mitragynine and 7-OH in the product.
    • There should be no statements that remove liability from the product unless it explicitly references misuse. Product liability disclaimers usually don’t shield a manufacturer from liability.
    • Some companies post their product testing results online.
      • I encourage you to check to see if the product you use publishes its test results.
    • Not all products are created equal. Some companies choose to use the same raw kratom material for all their products and label them as something different.
    • Kratom items should be clearly labeled on receipts.
      • Retailers that misidentify items on receipts may be trying to conceal something.

Illegal Products:

    • Products that contain 7-Hydroxymitragynine (7-OH) at greater than 2% of the alkaloid fraction.
    • Pseudoindoxyl and other products containing a synthetic alkaloid, including synthetic mitragynine, synthetic 7-hydroxymitragynine, or any other synthetically derived compound of the kratom plant.

Risks

Potential Health Implications

      • Abuse and Dependence: The opioid-like effects of Kratom, particularly at higher doses and with concentrated products, can lead to physical dependence and addiction. Withdrawal symptoms are similar to those of opioids.
      • Adverse Health Effects:
        • Rare but serious effects have been reported in people who use kratom, including hepatotoxicity, psychiatric, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal and respiratory problems.
      • Contamination: Kratom products have been found to be contaminated with heavy metals (lead, nickel) and pathogenic bacteria like Salmonella.
      • Drug Interactions: Kratom can interact with other substances, including prescription medications, which can lead to dangerous and unpredictable effects.
    • Synthetic Products: Synthetic kratom concentrates (7-OH, Pseudoindoxyl, and others) are far more potent than the natural leaf. These synthetic compounds are significantly more potent than morphine at opioid receptors, making them unpredictable and dangerous.

Your Role and Reporting Concerns

If you encounter a kratom product or retail establishment that you believe violates these requirements, or if you have any concerns about a product’s safety or labeling, please submit your concerns. Your feedback helps UDAF enforce these consumer protection laws.

Key Alkaloids and Their Mechanisms:

    • Mitragynine is the most prevalent alkaloid. It acts primarily as a partial agonist at mu-opioid receptors, similar to traditional opioids, but with a different pharmacological profile. It also interacts with alpha-2 adrenergic receptors and serotonin receptors, which may contribute to its stimulant and mood-modulating effects.
    • 7-Hydroxymitragynine is present in smaller quantities; however is significantly more potent than mitragynine at mu-opioid receptors. It is believed to be responsible for a substantial portion of kratom’s analgesic (pain-relieving) and sedative effects.
    • Kratom contains over 50 other alkaloids, including speciogynine, paynantheine, and mitraphylline. The roles of these minor alkaloids are less understood but may contribute to Kratom’s overall effects.
