UTAH
DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE AND FOOD IS CONFIDENT THAT ANIMAL WELFARE
WILL BE PROTECTED DURING OLYMPIC RODEO
Salt Lake City-The Utah Department of Agriculture and Food (UDAF) is confident
that the health and welfare of livestock participating in the Olympic Rodeo will
be of the highest level.
The Olympic Rodeo presents an opportunity to provide a glimpse of our Western
heritage to the world. Rodeo has a long history in Utah. Utah is the current
home of high school, college, and professional World Champions, including the
Bareback Champion Lan Lajeunesse, Bull Riding Champion Blue Stone, and the Utah
High School Rodeo Team National Champions, as well as five-time World Champion
Lewis Field, who is a member of the ProRodeo Hall of Fame. Lewis Field has
said that, "Competing in the [Calgary Rodeo] Olympics in 1988 was one of
the neatest experiences of my career."
The UDAF is confident that the 60 rules and regulations that are part
of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association's (PRCA) extensive animal
welfare program will adequately serve to protect the welfare of the
animal athletes. Organizations such as the American Veterinary Medical
Association (AVMA) express support for the PRCA's animal welfare
initiatives by adopting some of their rules for use in other efforts to
provide for humane handling of animals. Veterinarians will be on sight
at any Olympic venue that involves animals to ensure that they receive
the best of care and humane handling.
Foreign visitors will thrill at the chance to observe first hand,
this sport that is unique to North America. Rodeo athletes from the USA
and Canada will compete against each other as they bring the flavor of
the West to the 2002 Olympic games. In the spirit of the games, it would
be well to recognize that rodeo is a cultural competition that has an
historic place in our Western heritage.
