Uses Olympic Successes To
Strengthen Next 1000-Days
Capitalizing on
the successes of the Olympic experience, the Utah Department of Agriculture
and Food will focus on the following goals to strengthen its service
to the public during the next 1000 days and beyond.
The department's mission is to: Protect and Promote Utah
Agriculture and Food.
In doing so, the
department will work to ensure consumers a safe, wholesome and properly
labeled supply of food, fiber and other
agricultural products.
- Increased on-farm
biosecurity
- Increase disease
surveillance and monitoring of livestock, poultry and fish populations
to prevent the spread of animal borne diseases
- Increased food
and plant safety
- Expand on-line
services for licensing and registration and use credit cards for payment
- Acquire laboratory
equipment that uses new technology to reduce hazardous chemical usage
and increase laboratory efficiencies
- Seek new and
expended markets for agricultural products of Utah
- Educate and inform
the public about the departments values that recognize agriculture
to be a sustainable supply of safe, clean and healthy food and that
it values a clean environment
- Promote Utah's
Olympic Environmental and Public Health branding message, "Where
Life and Landscape Connect"
- Protect high-quality
farmland through the Critical Agricultural Land Conservation Fund
- Improve Utah's
environment by encouraging water and soil conservation, and provide
technical assistance and incentives
- Protect public
health through increased pesticide safety
- Work with DHRM
in classifying employee positions appropriately and working with the
legislative budget process to obtain necessary funding for compensation
- Permanently establish
the department's Olympic communications plan as the department's emergency
communications policy
