Governor Herbert and Commissioner Blackham Promote Utah Agriculture During Rural Jobs Tour
Commissioner Blackham joined Utah Governor Gary Herbert
as the governor conducted a four-day Rural Jobs and Education
Tour October 11 - 14, 2011. The tour kicked off in one of the
state's most remote towns, Grouse Creek in Northwestern Box
Elder County.

(above) Governor Herbert spent much of his time listening to
local farmers, ranchers and community leaders during his tour.
He visited the Tanner Family Della Ranches where the
Tanners have operated a sprawling cattle ranch for multiple
generations. The Tanners are the 2010 recipients of the
Leopold Conservation Award for their remarkable stewardship
of the land.

(also seated at counter) listen to Box Elder County rancher,
Tim Munns, during a visit to Mollies Cafe in Snowville, Utah.

(above) The rural tour visited one of three alfalfa compressing operations
owned by Bailey Farms International in Utah.
This is an example
of the economic linkage between Ag. producer and processor.
Alfalfa growers send their hay to Bailey who compresses
it into smaller and heavier bales for export to China. This helps
open markets for growers.
Bailey
helps keep more than 500 Utah alfalfa-growing family
farms in
business which creates a rippling effect that helps
the local community.

(above) Governor Herbert and Commissioner Blackham visit the
Morgan family dairy in Circleville, Utah. The Morgans run one
of the more advanced dairies in Utah, milking about 3,000
cows every day.
