Japanese Beetles in Utah County Are Going, Going...

Orem, Utah – Japanese beetles in Orem are nearly gone, according to the latest count by the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food (UDAF). A total of four beetles have been collected as of August 3, 2009 from traps in the central Orem beetle treatment area. The trapping of just four insects represents a continued trend of drastic declines from the previous year thanks to a comprehensive treatment program. A total of 100 beetles were collected in 2008 in specially designed insect traps which represented a 95 percent decline from catches in 2007. The four collected this year also represents another 95 percent decline from 2008. The four male beetles were found near 800 West Center Street and 150 North 600 West.

Orem City is asking that residents in the treatment area continue through September 3oth to bag their yard clippings for special pick up.

The UDAF will wait until the end of the summer to determine whether treatment is necessary in 2010.
