  • July 10, 2020 USU Extension Crops Virtual Field Days:
    Due to the CO-VID pandemic this year, USU Extension will not able to host their regular 10+ face-to-face field days this summer to provide tours of research plots and present research updates to growers, industry, agencies, and other interested stakeholders. In order to still provide these important updates and offer CEU credits, Utah State University Extension is hosting a single, large 2-day virtual field day on July 28th and 29th. There will be 7 sessions with over 40 presentations. Attendees can tune into as many sessions or parts of sessions as they would like.

  • May 27, 2020 | The USDA recently announced $1 billion in loan guarantees available to help rural businesses meet their working capital needs during the coronavirus pandemic. Additionally, agricultural producers that are not eligible for USDA Farm Service Agency loans may receive funding under USDA Business and Industry (B&I) CARES Act Program provisions. https://www.rd.usda.gov/programs-services/business-and-industry-cares-act-program
  • May 25, 2020 | CFAP provides vital financial assistance to producers of agricultural commodities who have suffered a five-percent-or-greater price decline due to COVID-19 and face additional significant marketing costs as a result of lower demand, surplus production, and disruptions to shipping patterns and the orderly marketing of commodities. Producers can apply for assistance beginning on May 26, 2020.  Additional information and application forms can be found at farmers.gov/cfap.
  • May 21, 2020 | The National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA) recently put out a press release on newly introduced federal legislation that will provide $1 billion funding to state departments of agriculture to support producers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • May 06, 2020 | The Utah Department of Agriculture and Food has now opened the application process for the UDAF COVID-19 Relief Grant Program to Utah agriculture operations that qualify.  This grant funding is in association with the CARES Act and Utah S.B. 3006.  Click here to learn more and apply.
  • May 04, 2020 | The SBA provides low-interest disaster loans to help businesses and homeowners recover from declared disasters. Apply for assistance here.

April 20, 2020 - U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue announced the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program (CFAP). This new U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) program will take several actions to assist farmers, ranchers, and consumers in response to the COVID-19 national emergency. President Trump directed USDA to craft this $19 billion immediate relief program to provide critical support to our farmers and ranchers, maintain the integrity of our food supply chain, and ensure every American continues to receive and have access to the food they need. April 16, 2020 - DHS and USDA Move to Protect American Farmers and Ensure Continued Flow of America’s Food Supply. The Department of Homeland Security, with the support of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), has announced a temporary final rule to change certain H-2A requirements to help U.S. agricultural employers avoid disruptions in lawful agricultural-related employment, protect the nation’s food supply chain, and lessen impacts from the coronavirus (COVID-19) public health emergency. These temporary flexibilities will not weaken or eliminate protections for U.S. workers. Click here for more information.

April 7, 2020 – UDAF remains open for business and as committed as ever to provide prompt, efficient service to the public. April 2, 2020 – Secretary Pompeo, in consultation with the Department of Homeland Security, has authorized consular officers to expand the categories of H-2 visa applicants whose applications can be adjudicated without an in-person interview.  Consular officers can, if they so choose, now waive the visa interview requirement for first-time and returning H-2 applicants who have no apparent ineligibility or potential ineligibility.  Learn more here.

March 31, 2020 -  For the next 30 days the State of Utah, under the supervision of the Department of Agriculture and Food, will allow restaurants to repackage and resell raw and prepackaged foods in their inventories. March 31, 2020 - The following letter template is meant to be used by farms and food businesses. While the department has tried to craft a letter that meets importation and movement requirements under the current COVID 19 restrictions, the letter is not guaranteed to be accepted by interstate border patrol and individuals should check local and state origin and destination restrictions daily to ensure compliance. March 23, 2020 - SLC Emergency Loan Program -  The purpose of this loan program is to provide financial relief to small businesses that will most likely see a downturn in business due to an unforeseen emergency.  The program is intended to help businesses keep their employees and stay afloat during a time of economic hardship. It is meant to bridge the gap for what may be a shortened financial hardship period.

March 18, 2020 - USDA Announces Feeding Program Partnership in Response to COVID-19 - This collaboration with the Baylor Collaborative on Hunger and Poverty, McLane Global, PepsiCo, and others will allow delivery of nearly 1,000,000 meals to students in some rural schools closed due to COVID-19.

March 17, 2020Click here to learn about H2A updates - H2A: In response to the global pandemic COVID-19, and in line with the Mexican government’s call to increase social distancing, the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City and all U.S. consulates in Mexico will suspend routine immigrant and nonimmigrant visa services, including H2A migrant farm worker visas starting March 18, 2020, and until further notice. The Monterey embassy will continue processing returning workers who do not require an interview.
