Food Producer Networking Event Designed to Get More Local Food to Utah Residents

(West Jordan) Local farmers and Utah’s Own member food product companies will meet tonight in a networking event designed to increase the amount of locally grown and raised ingredients in salsas, baked goods and other value added food products made in Utah.

The Food Producers Networking Event, hosted by the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food and Utah State University Extension will take place this evening at the Viridian Center in West Jordan.

“A lot of times the newer and smaller food companies and farms don’t know each other. This event will give those companies a chance to meet and hopefully put together local sourcing deals,” said Laurie Seron, Utah’s Own director, Utah Department of Agriculture and Food.

While farm to chef efforts have been done in Utah in the past, organizers believe this is the first time a formal effort has been made to connect farms and food companies locally.

There are several companies that buy produce from local farms at farmers markets. That may be the type of relationships that are forged tonight, said Seron. However, event organizers hope that more companies and farms will follow the lead of Salsitas Mendoza and Petersen Family Farms and enter into season long contracts that will benefit both parties.
