Caramel Apple Advisory


In response to an apparent outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes in 10 states, including one case in Utah, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are advising consumers to not eat commercially produced, prepackaged caramel apples.  The advisory does not include locally produced caramel apples made in Utah.

As of December 19, 2014, a total of 29 people infected with the outbreak strains of Listeria monocytogenes have been reported.

The Utah Department of Agriculture and Food (UDAF) is alerting Utah grocery stores to pull from their shelves any commercially produced, prepackaged caramel apples that were distributed from out of state.  The UDAF advises consumers to look through their refrigerators and pantries for these products and discard them.

Investigators are working quickly to determine specific brands or types of prepackaged caramel apples which may be linked to illnesses and to identify the source of contamination.

This investigation is rapidly evolving, and new information will be provided as it becomes available.
