What's Next at the Utah State Fair?
The Utah's Own Funeral Potato Contest: Tuesday, Sept. 9th , registration 7:00 p.m. and judging at 7:30 p.m. in the Zion Building. This contest is designed to encourage the use of products grown, produced or processed in Utah. Participants are required to use at least one Utah's Own ingredient, but are encouraged to use more. Dishes will be judged on taste, appearance, originality and creativity of the recipe and the best use of Utah's Own products (products must be clearly identified by brand name or in the case of fresh produce, who it was purchased or procured from). The Utah State Fair Dutch Oven Contest, sponsored by Farm Bureau and Utah’s Own in the specialty event tent. The contest begins at 2:00 pm with the final awards at 8:00 pm. Judging will continue throughout the competition. The Best of the Best Chefs cooking with Dutch ovens will prepare a meal from appetizers to dessert. Contestants are encouraged to use Utah’s Own ingredients with 20% of the points awarded based on these ingredients. The chef using the most Utah’s Own products will receive a $75.00 gift bag from Utah’s Own. The contest begins at 2:00 p.m. with the final awards at 8:00 p.m. Judging will continue throughout the competition.
Utah’s Own Watermelon Eating Contest will be held Friday Sept 12 on the Xfinity Stage beginning at 6:00 p.m.. There will be categories for different ages. This is a fun event for 4-H and FFA exhibitors as well as visitors to the fair. Bring your whole family to participate in this fall eating event. Of course the watermelons are from Utah.
Eat Local Week Utah and the Eat Local Challenge September 6 - 13, 2014
Eat Local Week celebrates the regional harvest, promotes local agriculture and the preservation of Utah’s agricultural heritage, and brings people together as a community. Through a series of activities and events, Eat Local Week educates the community about resources for eating locally, and increases awareness around food production, transportation, and access to healthy food.

Tast of Utah - held Sept. 4th
Tens of thousands of Utahans look forward each year to the unique experiences and tastes found at the Utah State Fair. None are any better than what has become an opening day tradition of Utah’s Own “Taste of Utah.”
Some fifty local food companies filled the Special Events Tent on Thursday, September 4th, from noon to 8:00 p.m. While it is impossible to know just how many people enjoyed the great local food, Todd Jacobsen, owner of Commercial Food Services, indicated he brought 3,500 samples of his tasty Café Reyes products, but ran out about 7:00 pm. Fair Goers were able to enjoy a smorgasbord of great products such as breads, honey, jams, teriyaki meatballs, taquitos, gluten-free products, pancakes, syrup, bacon soup, salad and dressings, chocolate and taffy, barbecue sauce, chips and salsa, fresh apples and peaches, and much, much more. Attendees could even try quality skin care products made locally as well.
“There was an excellent representation of Utah’s Own member companies at Taste of Utah,” stated Jed Christenson, Director of Marketing for the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food, “from young start-ups to some in business for decades.” He went on to comment about the positive feedback he received from both the participating companies and the Fair Attendees that enjoyed the great food.
The Utah’s Own Program was created to educate consumers about the importance of buying locally grown, manufactured and made agriculture and food products whenever possible. Dollars spent on local products are re-invested in our communities creating a multiplying effect. As local companies prosper they pay more taxes and hire more employees benefitting all citizens of Utah. Let’s keep it here at home and buy Utah’s Own.
