UDAF Well Represented at Utah County Farm Day

Imagine giving a presentation to 20-30 elementary school children about the area of agriculture you represent. Now imagine telling that story in six minutes and doing it about 20 times in about three hours.

That’s the challenge that faces presenters at the Utah County Farm Bureau Farm Field Day, which was held April 2-4, 2014 at Harward Farms in Springville.

On Friday April 4th, Utah Department of Agriculture and Food (UDAF) Commissioner LuAnn Adams attended. While there, she was put to work helping with the beef cattle presentation. Students learned how cattle grazing can help public land managers keep range lands healthy and even prevent wildfires. They also learned that the beef they eat is a great source of vitamins, minerals, including zinc and iron, and protein. “Beef gives you ZIP,” was the message.

Adell Young, UDAF egg inspector, was also among the many presenters at the field day. She helped students understand how eggs get from the chicken to the store and the inspection process they go through. 

Students also got to see a sheep shearing demonstration, and learn about many other aspects of farming and ranching, from growing vegetables and fruit, to many livestock industries. Live chickens, calves, piglets, horses and other animals were on hand to help give students a real life farm experience.

Several hundred school children from throughout Utah County attend during the three day event, which is sponsored annual by the Utah and Utah County Farm Bureau offices.
