Dairy Lab Employees Win Governor's Excellence Award

Four employees from the UDAF Dairy Testing Lab were honored for "Innovation and Efficiency" as part of the Governor's Awards for Excellence.

Sushma Karna, Dr. Steven Wright, Jennifer Sung, and Dr. Mohammed Sharaf were presented the award in a ceremony at the State Capitol in early May by Utah Governor Gary Herbert, Lt. Gov. Greg Bell and Utah Commissioner of Agriculture and Food, Leonard Blackham.

The UDAF employees and Dairy Lab were recognized for several accomplishments, including being the only lab in Utah and one of only a few nationwide to receive an internationally recognized certification by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the American Association of Laboratory Accreditation. This certification allows Utah products such as Gossner Foods' Ultra-High Temperature (UHT) milk to be accepted into more countries worldwide.

Additionally UDAF Lab employees mentor one another on new procedures to increase efficiency; they have implemented a Root Cause Analysis process to reduce lab errors; and they have implemented several measures to prudently use state money, time, manpower and instrumentation.

Utahns should feel good knowing this because when we say that Utah's food supply is safe, it is backed up by one of the country's most credible and professional dairy testing labs.
